  • A Sound Idea Acoustic Canopy

    The ‘Braemar Canopy’ built for the re-insurance firm Braemar Seascope is the most ambitious metal structure undertaken by Studio Caparo to date.

    The brief:- Create an ‘acoustic canopy’ that would reflect sound back onto the insurance brokers working beneath it. The company’s offices were in a huge hall and employees found it very difficult to communicate clearly.

    Studio Caparo, in close collaboration with other members of the Caparo Group (Hub le Bas, CMT), developed a tubular steel suspension frame. Over 3 tons of 24mm thick laminated glass was suspended from the frame creating an acoustic glass ceiling, 10 feet above the employees. In addition to its functionality, the design also maintained a minimalist aesthetic. Despite its size, it remains unobtrusive and does not dominate the room.

    Studio Caparo overcame many challenges creating the Braemar Canopy. One of the most significant was the installation itself. The floor of the office was hollow to allow for air conditioning ducts and was far too fragile to support the weight of the canopy. In response, Studio Caparo installed RSJ’s beneath the hollow floor and bolted the canopy legs directly to these solid supports. The canopy legs seamlessly emerge from holes cut in the hollow floor, keeping all the structural metalwork out of sight. Furthermore, access to the office hall was very limited and it was clear that it would be almost impossible to utilise a crane for the install. Instead, Studio Caparo used specialist rigging techniques to haul the structure into place. Comprising mechanical winches and super strong synthetic ropes the rigging equipment could be packed into a single bag; yet such was its performance it was able to lift the multi-ton support spars of the structure with ease.

    The Braemar Canopy is a perfect example of Studio Caparo’s innovative metal structure capabilities.
