  • Stacked Unique Drawer Concept

    The brief:- The upcoming designer Shay Alkalay developed a unique drawer concept named ‘Stack’ for Established & Sons. Studio Caparo was entrusted with prototyping the concept and creating two working versions for the 2008 Milan furniture show.

    The design presented a unique challenge as the drawers stacked upon each other without any external frame. The key was to create a hidden internal framework that was minimal enough to allow the drawers reasonable movement, but strong enough to allow the 3 metre tall piece to stand without visible support.

    Studio Caparo combined metalwork with joinery to create a modular lattice inside the unit that was incredibly stiff, yet remarkably compact. Bespoke sliding drawer runners allowed easy movement of the drawers yet were calibrated with enough friction to leave the drawer in any position even if the drawers were unevenly filled. This was in line with the designer’s vision, who remarked, ‘I think chest of drawers look more intriguing when the drawers are left partly open’. Part of the charm of the Stack design is the ability to set the drawers in an infinite combination of positions- a mouldable sculpture that is also fully functional.

    The Stack project is typical of the cutting edge design promoted by Established & Sons. Studio Caparo is excited to be involved in bringing many of their projects to fruition.

  • A very big house in the country The Dream Brief

    The Brief:- An owner of a large mansion situated outside London set Studio Caparo a dream brief- fill every room with fantastical bespoke furniture!

    Over a period of 18 months Studio Caparo worked in close collaboration with this client to create a truly unique furnished residence. All of Studio Caparo’s techniques and skills were utilised in this project.

    In the dining room Studio created a 20 ft. long CNC machined dining table, with traditional burr top supported by an engineered steel high tension wire frame. In the kitchen, a fridge unit was hidden behind leather clad slats that effortlessly rolled upwards due to a gas counterweight system. For the top floor cinema room a 20 person curving upholstered seating unit was hand built onsite. Every piece was made to fit its environment and the end result was a house that maintained a fluid aesthetic whilst showcasing the most advanced techniques in bespoke furniture manufacture.

    The client had big ideas, and Studio Caparo was able to make them a reality. What the project showed in action is Studio Caparo’s unique collaborative design resolution. The company worked in constant contact with the client, changing details and prototypes throughout the manufacturing process until the client had exactly what he wanted.
